Music: Family Guy (sick of the same eps over and over again!)
10:15p
My week off didn't start off so well. Although I didn't plan on getting released so early at work on Sunday, it was still nice to have the afternoon off. I found a not so nice surprise later on that night. Why I don't keep up with these things is beyond me. Lesson learned! I had woken up at 2:45 that morning to check a couple of things on the internet before leaving for work, and the tiredness was already catching up to me, now I had that lovely gift on top of it. I passed out somewhere around midnight, completely dead. That's what I get for laying down. I woke up two hours later to find my computer had shut itself off (something I've set it up not to do). I was wide awake again by this point, so I turned it back on and proceeded to mill around for another two hours. So if you don't count a nap (and I'm not), I was pretty much up over 24 hours. I haven't stayed awake past 4am in a very long time. :)
I woke up Monday morning, already feeling like shit and having made the decision I wasn't doing a damn thing, when I heard my mom yell. She was outside in the flowerbed, so I thought she'd seen a snake (it's happened before). I went outside to find 5 baby kittens wrapped up in the flowerbed! The mother cat had shot off like a rocket. There were three black ones, and one grey and one orange one. They had just been born; their eyes weren't even open yet. They were so little! We could hear them meowing. My mom got on the phone and called our local vet. They could not take the kittens that young. So she called a couple of places in Baytown. Just about everyone told us that without the mother, the babies would more than likely be put down, as they require so much care, and so often, that they would need the mother for that.
We finally got a hold of animal control, and the guy said he'd come by and pick up the kittens, but that it would be the same situation without the mother. Of course we were heartbroken, here were these cute kittens that hadn't done anything to deserve that fate, but what else could we do? We had no way of taking care of cats, much less kittens. So my dad put them in a box with a towel, and they seemed to calm down. A while later we could tell they were hungry, they were making sucking noises. The mother cat did in fact come back, but there was no way we could catch her. She's a stray that has been wandering around for a couple of years. A wild cat.
Eventually, AC came and picked up the kittens and offered to set up a trap for us if we needed it. We told him we'd keep an eye out. Again, the mother came back and looked in the flowerbed. She knew the kittens weren't there, but the AC guy was telling us if we'd left the babies out there, she'd have come and taken off with them in a hurry. Eight weeks later, we'd have even more cats running around, so we did the right thing. I just really hope that there was at least SOMETHING they could have done for the kittens before they'd even consider putting them to sleep. They really were cute.
I'm looking forward to the next few weeks for many different reasons. My sister is going to be helping me look for an apartment, and I'm hoping things at work keep getting better. I'll be updating as much as I can. Or if I don't forget, which I tend to do. A lot.
Thanks for watching, folks. Now go home. I'm sick of looking at you! ;D
